Wildlife conservation at Bioparque La Rocha

Conservation and recovery

Bioparque La Rocha is a centre committed to the conservation of species. We belong to several conservation-related associations and take an active part in international ex situ conservation projects.

Conservation programmes

Ex situ conservation

Actions to conserve species and populations carried out outside their natural environment are known as ex situ conservation. They complement in situ conservation, which must always be promoted as the priority. When in situ conservation is no longer possible, or its effectiveness is limited, ex situ measures through specific programmes may be more appropriate (captive breeding of species that are extinct or threatened in a given area, reintroduction to the wild, monitoring, and so on). Zoos, which have their own regulations, are institutions of great value in supporting this kind of action.

At Bioparque La Rocha we take part in the following conservation projects:

Cape porcupine · ISB Edwards's pheasant · EEP Bennett's wallaby · ISB Salmon-crested cockatoo · ESB Snowy owl · EEP Meerkat · MonT Golden pheasant 5000 · MonT Red-crowned crane
Recovery projects

A safe home for native wildlife

Bioparque La Rocha is a centre authorised by the Castilla-La Mancha regional government (JCCM) to house species that are undergoing recovery or that, for various reasons, cannot be returned to the wild, providing a safe environment and ensuring their animal welfare needs are met.

These are some of the species we house:

Eurasian eagle-owl Goshawk Black kite Booted eagle Common buzzard White stork Common kestrel Grey heron
